Shameless Self Promotion

Journal Entry: Fri Nov 13, 2009, 1:08 PM
Twitter is useful for some things it seems. Thanks to Twitter I caught Jonathon Woodward's call out for artists to talk about their style in an upcoming post he was planning. For those who don't know Jonathon, he is a graphic designer turned illustrator and author of the excellent Zero 2 Illo blog which I have been following for a while now. So you can imagine I was very excited when I got a reply from Jonathon asking me to submit some words about an illustration of mine which encapsulates my style.

To see the illustration I chose and what I had to say about it just follow this link: [link]

I feel very privileged to have the chance to talk about my style on Jonathon's blog, especially after seeing the calibre of the other artists he is featuring. The task of trying to define one's style in just a few paragraphs is a wonderful challenge I encourage you all to try. It really made me stare down a dusty, dark corridor I had been ignoring for quite a while.

  • Mood: Artistic
  • Listening to: LOTR soundtrack - can't help myself
  • Reading: Two Towers - can't help myself
  • Watching: Curb your Enthusiasm
  • Playing: Run Hamster Run
  • Eating: Liver cleansing...
  • Drinking: ... so no alcohol!

This is the first time I have left a message for someone here. The artist has to be of exceptional talent. So that talent looks like it is U!
I'm also an artist like everyone else here, but may not post anything.
I love your contrast in color and texture. You bring out the life in the creation.
It's good to see someone here in DA that is not a teenager or in their early 20's. We mature adults, that is up for debate mind you, need to put our stamp on DA too.
BRAVO to you for creating a feast for my eyes.
Mary

Hi Andy! I found your blog through twitter and I really like your work. Thanks for the watch here on DA. I look forward to seeing more from you in the future!

Thanks for the kind words about the Paizo work! I'll be able to post more I did for them in September when the Beastiary comes out.

Your vampire challenge illo really stood out in the field of 78 entries. Can't wait to see what you do with the book cover challenge.

Thanks again!

Many thanks, Michael. It will be a challenge for me. Working digitally in colour isn't my strong suit :)
Pleasure to meet you and I look forward to seeing more of your work too.

Really? Ain't nothing to it. :) I work in Photoshop. I render everything in greyscale and then color later. Seperating the two processes doesn't work for everyone, but it helps me out a lot. Wierdly old fashioned way of working with the high tech medium. :)

Actually, that's something I have wanted to do for a while now - build up my values in greyscale and then add colour at the end. The embarrassing thing to admit is, despite many, many years of Photoshop experience I am not 100% sure how to do that! Will be fun to research though :)
Cheers!

A lot of the time I set up a dichromatic light/shadow color scheme using a 'soft light' layer over the 'colorized' monochromatic illustration. The 'soft light' layer mixes down (with some tweaking) and becomes the color temp for the shadows. It really helps me reign in my color use. If I painted in color, I would be all over the place. If I can set up a nice hue relationship between light and shadow first, then spot color over that, it works out pretty well for me most of the time.
