Artist's Comments

It has been a long time coming - and here it is: my latest Tolkien illustration! The scene first fell out on the paper in a rush, right up to the inking stage. And then it sat, in hiatus, for quite some time as I fussed about how to paint it. Thankfully, this recent long weekend gave me enough time to tackle it head-on again.

Very happy with the vintage feel to the colours in the end.
Details of the steps leading to this stage can be found in my blog.

Many thanks for the support on this one.

Bamfurlong by =AndyIomoon. From the suggester: "Along with it being an often-neglected scene from LOTR, the artist completely captures Farmer Maggot's personality with this one painting. The small details also make it perfect- full view is a must!" (Suggested by *AinuLaire and Featured by ^ArtisticAunJuli)

You left it aside for quite some time but once back you've finished it so fast! I love the blacks, warms and cools all over that rider and horse, taking it already :+favlove:

I love the pic, but I find the Ringwraith and his horse too small

Zylver wandering around, alone and lost beneath the painfully deep shadows of his lone soul

Ahh yes, but this was the lesser known Ringwraith: Shrimpy :)
Thanks for the comment. It would be interesting to see what it might have looked like if the Rider was larger. I just worry whether it would overpower the composition too much.

Thank you :)
I was very happy with the way he came out. I think I managed to capture his defiance!

I got excited and on a roll! :)
Do the warms and cools work together? I wasn't sure if I was breaking some major watercolour rule doing that...

and happy with the result you should be.... Sometimes those images that take the longest are the best. Just waiting for a chance to mature like a fine wine until they're ready.

This is lovely Andy.

Good on you, Aaron. I know you understand :)
Good luck with your current projects. All the hints you have been dropping about your current job sound very intriguing :)
