These Hobbit illustrations are taking me a little longer than I had planned so I thought I might show some progress here to keep my motivation up. Consider this a place-holder. I will update this as often as I can.

One of my favourite scenes in the book when poor old Bombur loses his balance and falls in the enchanted stream when a dark hart leaps from one side to the other.

**edit 6/7 - blocked in a lot more of the tones now. Mirkwood is almost as difficult to draw as it is to travel through I feel! Still a fair bit of finessing to do on this but I might sit on it for a little while.

** another edit 29/12 - added some inks and fixed up the head of the hart that has always looked goofy. Much happier with it now and the scan in general, which is a lot crisper.

I'm really enjoying how murky, Mirkwood forest is. I think that the complex scene is captured skillfuly as well.

This will be a challenge to paint - especially with all that graphite down on the page... let's see whether that expensive bottle of ox gall liquid can do its job!

Unbelievable how well you can draw with a simple pencil. :omfg: The deer looks a bit odd, but I really like how you drew everything else, especially the gnarled trees.

Yes, the deer is definitely 'odd'. The whole idea of it throwing its head back as it is shot by Thorin's arrow hasn't really worked... I may still be able to save it though :)
