Deep in Mirkwood - Inks by AndyIomoon Deep in Mirkwood - Inks by AndyIomoon
These Hobbit illustrations are taking me a little longer than I had planned so I thought I might show some progress here to keep my motivation up. Consider this a place-holder. I will update this as often as I can.

One of my favourite scenes in the book when poor old Bombur loses his balance and falls in the enchanted stream when a dark hart leaps from one side to the other.

**edit 6/7 - blocked in a lot more of the tones now. Mirkwood is almost as difficult to draw as it is to travel through I feel! Still a fair bit of finessing to do on this but I might sit on it for a little while.

** another edit 29/12 - added some inks and fixed up the head of the hart that has always looked goofy. Much happier with it now and the scan in general, which is a lot crisper.

I'm really enjoying how murky, Mirkwood forest is. I think that the complex scene is captured skillfuly as well.

This will be a challenge to paint - especially with all that graphite down on the page... let's see whether that expensive bottle of ox gall liquid can do its job!

Oooh, this is one of my favourite parts of the book! :D I love the tangled trees, they are perfect for Mirkwood.

Unbelievable how well you can draw with a simple pencil. :omfg: The deer looks a bit odd, but I really like how you drew everything else, especially the gnarled trees.

Yes, the deer is definitely 'odd'. The whole idea of it throwing its head back as it is shot by Thorin's arrow hasn't really worked... I may still be able to save it though :)
Thanks for the lovely comment.

Your trees are AMAZING!! All that detail, whoa!! I would die before I drew that. So many twists and turns, light and dark...wow.

Believe me, by the end of the first pass on those trees I would have been happy not to draw another one for a long time :)
Many thanks for the kind comments.

cool! I like it! My eyes went first to the deer, then the archer, then Bilbo, then Bombur! I really like the trees, it looks quite oppressive, just like Mirkwood should! :)

Lovely feedback. Thank you. I'm glad to hear how your eye travels around this one as I was worried things would be too complicated and it would all look muddy. Hope you feel the same way now that I have updated it.

Well there's a lot going on so it's a delicate balance, but I think you've done a good job with it! are you planning on using color or this going to be black and white?

I would love to throw some muted colours at this. I just need to work out whether I can do that traditionally or whether I resort to digital means.

I would definitely have a b&w scan of it in your computer so you can color it digitally if it doesn't work out traditionally. I guess I'd be worried about smudging all that pencil work if I did it traditionally.

I will definitely want a good digital scan as a back up. My plan will be to colour it with watercolour. There are a couple of steps in the preparation for painting it that should protect the pencils from smudging but still allow the watercolours to permeate the shiny graphite. I bought some very expensive Ox Gall liquid and a few drops of that added to the water I use to soak the paper before stretching it is meant to reduce the likelihood of the watercolour beading on top of the graphite.

I can't wait to see this in colors ! Are you working for a true publication of the Hobbit, or it's just for fun ?

Just for fun. Although, if there are any publishers out there that want to throw a project my way... :D
I would like to colour this one down the line too. I imagine a lot of muted tones with the brighter (yet travel-stained) colours of the dwarves and Bilbo helping them jump off the page.

Haha wow this is fantastic! It's funny and whimsical but also dramatic at the same time, if that makes sense. I love your lines and shading!
