Feb2009 Painting - Galadriel by AndyIomoon Feb2009 Painting - Galadriel by AndyIomoon
Well - just squeaked in for my February painting deadline!
Here is my final version of Galadriel by her mirror - an image inspired by a beautiful panning shot in Peter Jackson's Fellowship of the Ring.

Watercolour - 50cm x 35cm
No inks this time!

The various stages of this illustration can be seen on my blog.

Awesome colors! Love Galadriel's intense expression. The detail on the mirror is beautiful - the ivy, and the chain-like rim. Very nice! :)

I'm drawn to the ivy creeping over the pedestal -it looks like it could be part of the carved design. Typical Elven sense of decoration :aww:

It's hard to resist not putting creeping ivy in most of my illustrations :)

:sherlock: Aha -- so you've been secretly hiding your WIP in your blog! No wonder I hadn't seen this 'til now.

It apparently was worth the wait, though. :D I really like the mottled leaves and backflow marks on the basin; they really give it a sense of great antiquity. Galadriel's embroidery is gorgeous, too. And 50cm? Wow, I've never painted a watercolor quite that large. Did you have to flatten it again afterwards? Or did stretching the paper beforehand do the trick?

The staples held although it did buckle a bit when I laid down some of my heavier washes. Thankfully it dried flat again. Thanks very much for the lovely feedback

Its gorgeous!!!!! Your best yet by far IMHO. I love how ethereal it all seems. The smooth trees are so ghostlike, and her expression is haunting. :worship:

Interesting colour scheme! I thought you would have gone with the cool blues like in the film :P
Galadriel is beautiful, I love the way you painted her hair, and the bright yellows really draw the eye.
The detail on around the base of the mirror is gorgeous, and I love the ivy! I also love the way the black in the background seems to fan out, it is a very interesting effect :D

Beautiful work Andy!

Thank you so much :)
To be honest, I was going from memory and purples were in my head for some reason. Blues would work beautifully too. Must remember that for my next night time piece.
Thanks again for the lovely feedback.

Came out great!

I got to your blog too late to comment on the use of black... I am among those who ban black totally out of my palette, a selfmixed dark grey is always better and adds a lot of depth. A cold grey would have been ideal here.

But I love the composition and the pose, it's so hard to draw elves!

Thanks, Sunila. And I agree about the blacks. I used a little black pencil on her face - very sparingly I promise. The shadows for the most part are a mix of cobalt blue, a neutral tint and a colour called amethyst - all from my Peerless swatches. They have come out very dark in my scan though!

Already started on the next project would you believe!

Brilliant design, reflections, hair, color palette... You appear to be MUCH more confident with watercolors now.

Can I have the ivy? :p

Thank you, dear sis. I guess you are right. I am feeling much less inhibited about my watercolours... but it still took me a good few days to get up the courage to put the first bit of paint down :)
This was one of those illustrations where it came out very close to what I had in my head. If I look at it too long I will find things I am unhappy about which is why I have already started on the next one! Loving this creative bender I am on :)

It shows you came very close to what image you had in your head. Keep it up, gorgeous work! (The first bit of paint is always the hardest. ;))

I'm also loving this creative bender you're on, and can't wait for the next picture!
